As part of the Birmingham and West Midlands Big Read project, we will be decorating two benches shaped as open books with designs inspired by children's favourite novels, comics, poems and prose. The benches have been purchased for the school using funds raised by the Friends.
During assembly this morning, KS2 children were challenged to produce a design for one of the benches over the Easter holidays, using the template provided. Completed designs should be handed in to the class teacher when we return in April. Winning designs will then be selected and children will be invited to decorate the bench.
The adorned BookBenches will then be displayed around the region in cultural hubs, leisure complexes and shopping centres to create a series of free indoor art trails, giving everybody the opportunity to enjoy young people’s creativity during the summer holidays of 2016.
The Big Read will be complemented by a programme of activities around the displays in venues to spark everybody’s interest in reading and writing, such as poetry slams, story-telling sessions, creative writing workshops and comic book illustration.
After the display the BookBenches will be returned to the schools and community groups that decorated them, where they could become a lasting feature of a library, book corner or outside learning environment.
